na hakach, świńskich łbach na tacy:

rozpycha się łokciami, zaciskając w garści puszkę piwa;

wciąz udaje, że mówi, choć tylko

wypluwa z siebie bełkot, chrząkanie,

obelgi, gory przekleństw

i ani jednego sensownego słowa:

chłopcy rzeźnika odkładają noże

oparci o ścianę słuchają, jak się wije,

jeszcze jedno, pochylenie ramion, lewy prosty,

zmiana pozycji, kolejny wybuch szderstw, rozkazów i gróźb

nic nie ma sensu. Nic.

Macbeth shadow boxes through the afternoons

in the covered market; he likes to do it

by the butcher’s best: their great carcasses

hung up on gibbets, pigs’ heads on a dish:

he’ll be there, bobbing and feinting,

dabbing out an elbow, beer can in his fist;

and all the time a kind of talking,

gibberish in grunts and exclamations,

insults, invective, volleys of abuse

and not word of sense among them:

the butcher boys put down their knives,

lean back and listen as he weaves on past:

another drop of shoulder, left jab, shuffle,

another burst of taunts, commands and threats,

and none of it intelligible, nothing.
